Afghan Resettlement

Canada has offered to receive 20 000 Afghan refugees over the coming months. They have fled a dangerous situation in their homeland and are destitute. Calgary has been designated a hub city and will assist 6000 Afghan refugees for settlement in Calgary and the western provinces.

The Calgary Catholic Immigrant Society (CCIS) has taken on the task of processing their arrival. There are many ways and many levels of involvement if you would like to help.

  • Volunteers are needed for various tasks from picking up and delivering household items to helping set up bank accounts and enrolling children in school. You may be interested in taking on an individual or family for a year to help them learn about life in Canada and support them in their new life. CCIS will provide all the support and information you will need. Funding for living expenses is being covered by the federal government for one year.

  • If you and your family or a circle of friends are interested in this opportunity to serve and would like more information, please go to CCISab.ca website, talk to Keith Schnell at West Springs Church, or email connect@westsprings.church.

Asylum Seekers Initiative Group

The Church has always welcomed and ministered to those who are persecuted, in danger, and in need on the basis of the Lord’s words: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me…. Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25). The migration/refugee crisis in the world today challenges our central principles as followers of Christ.

For the past 4 years, this group has successfully assisted the resettlement in Canada of asylum-seekers from Syria, Iraq, and Congo. The work continues. You are welcome to join the team!
